Family Literacy Day is January 27th!
Learning happens everywhere, everyday. It's important to participate in literacy activities as a family. On January 27th, we celebrate Family Literacy to raise awareness of just that! Here are some activities that you can participate in to celebrate literacy. Do them as a family, or on your own.
- 1. Read to your child(ren)--read them whatever sparks their interest...their favourite book, a graphic novel, a story from their kids magazine.
- 2. Have your child(ren) read to you, their choice (or yours). Just be sure to pay attention and maybe even ask them questions at the end to show them your interest. It will inspire more family reading time.
- 3. The daily news can interest anyone. Buy the newspaper or go online and choose a news story to read and then critique. Talk about the topic, its meaning, any possible bias, etc...It's sure to spark some conversation at the dinner table!
- 4. To prepare for that dinner, practice/develop of numeracy by following a recipe. Measure the different ingredients and learn about their nutritional value by reading the Nutrition Facts labels.
- 5. Use the Internet to research an interesting topic that the family wants to learn about. It will improve everyone's reading and comprehension skills. And who knows what you will find out?
- 6. If you have younger children, visit your local grocery store or just take a tour around your house to find something that begins with each letter of the alphabet.
- 7. Write a letter to a family member or friend. Not only will you and your family practice putting ideas together, but you will also be practicing your spelling and penmanship (as you won't have spellcheck to correct it). Plus, think of the joy your friend or family will get receiving a hand-written letter in the mail instead of a bill!
- 8. To practice your oral communication, have a family debate; just be sure to choose a topic that all members of the family can contribute to. You can choose a personal topic, like where you will have your next family vacation or maybe something more global, such as social media. The point of your debate is to practice constructing verbal arguments and learning to listen to one another without interrupting.
- 9. Play a board game. Choose a game that you can play individually and as a team, then play a round as individual players and then as a team to notice the difference of working as a team vs. alone.
- 10. Participate in a local Family Literacy Event. Check ABC Life Literacy for events in the GTA, or visit your local library to participate in one of their events.
